Frequently asked questions about pelvic floor physiotherapy

What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the muscles, connective tissue, and nerves of the pelvic floor. Treatment is aimed at women in all stages of life – from pregnancy and childbirth to menopause and older age – and addresses functional problems in the pelvic region, including the bladder, bowel, and sexual function.

Who can benefit from Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

What happens at the first consultation?

What does a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy programme involve?

A typical programme consists of 4–8 sessions depending on the nature and severity of the problem. Treatment may include manual therapy of the pelvic floor and surrounding structures, guidance on correct pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback (measurement of muscle activity), relaxation techniques, postural training and ergonomic advice, as well as education on bladder and bowel habits. Exercises and advice are given to take home so that you actively participate in your own recovery.

Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy painful or uncomfortable?

Most patients do not find the treatment painful. It is normal to feel mild discomfort during the internal examination, particularly if you already experience pelvic pain. The physiotherapist always works within your boundaries and will stop immediately if you wish. Open communication is central to the treatment, and you have the right at any time to pause or ask about anything you are unsure of.

Do I need a referral, and is the treatment covered by public health insurance?

In most cases, you can contact a pelvic floor physiotherapist directly without a referral from your doctor. If you wish to receive a subsidy from your public health insurance or local authority, a medical referral is often required. It is recommended that you check with your GP and your health insurance provider, as coverage varies. Many private clinics also offer treatment without a referral on a self-pay basis.
